SIA Announces 2021 Best Companies to Work For

(Edited from SIA 2021 Best Staffing Firms to Work For list, March 2021)

Year after year, companies making Staffing Industry Analysts’ “Best Companies to Work For” list share employee-oriented characteristics like open-door policies, robust training, and career development, and off-the-charts employee engagement. SIA’s 2021 winners have done it all despite a global pandemic that saw the world shelter in place and conduct business virtually.

Putting people first in a virtual environment, the “Best Staffing Firms to Work For” winners found new ways to maintain engagement. Education, training, and entertainment programs were all conducted virtually as teams worked hard placing talent — including for the front lines of fighting COVID-19. Fostering that sense of connection and community while working remotely encouraged staffing firms to host parties, ugly-sweater contests, and games like Family Feud or charades over video connection.

Floyd Lee Named Tops for Temping

Floyd Lee Locums stood out among locum tenens staffing firms as the “Grand Prize Winner” in the “Best Staffing Firms to Temp For” category for the second year running.

Founded four years ago, the 35-employee agency based in Charleston, South Carolina, “staffs physicians, dentists, CRNAs, NPs, PAs and respiratory therapists across all major hospital departments and specialties,” according to SIA.

With decades of experience in nurse staffing, co-founder and CEO Natasha Lee and Chairman Matt Floyd partnered in opening Floyd Lee Locums with the vision of offering a concierge approach to locum tenens staffing. SIA’s profile on the company indicates Floyd Lee Locums offers a “unique, enduring temp experience” that includes “personalized partnerships, tailored support and work experiences, and embracing its healthcare providers as integral team members.”

Healthcare Staffing Veteran Janet Elkin Acquires Icon Medical Network

(Edited from SIA Daily News)

Healthcare staffing veteran Janet Elkin now owns, and serves as CEO for, national locum tenens provider ICON Medical Network. Terms of the transaction, which closed January 1, were not disclosed.

Launched in 2010 and headquartered in the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego, Ore., ICON will expand through both acquisition and hiring nationally, Elkin told SIA.

Prior ICON Managing Partner Ashley Simpson remains on board as chief development officer, while Tammy Bills, formerly VP and controller at Supplemental Health Care, serves as ICON’s CFO. In addition, Milan Boulette, a longtime locum tenens industry leader who most recently served as VP of managed services at Cross Country Locums, joined ICON as the senior VP of client services.

CompHealth founder Dr. Therus Kolff will join the board as an advisor. One of the first locum tenens companies, CompHealth Inc. now operates as CHG Healthcare Services Inc.

Inducted into SIA’s “Staffing 100 Hall of Fame” in 2017, Elkin made SIA’s “Global Power 50 Women in Staffing” list in 2020. Her nearly-two decades of healthcare staffing industry experience include serving as president and CEO of GHR Healthcare, and in leadership roles at Recruit IQ Staffing and Supplemental Healthcare.

COVID Relief Bill Changes Tax Rules for Independent-Contractor Gig Workers (Marketwatch)

(Edited from SIA Daily News)

The $1.9-trillion COVID-19 aid package will bring a tax change for independent contractors. Gig economy companies will have to send 1099-K forms to workers who have earned more than $600 in a year on their platforms, MarketWatch reported. This is down from the prior thresholds of $20,000 a year and 200 transactions for gig economy companies; other businesses already had a $600 threshold. The move has been criticized by some, including the US Chamber of Commerce.

(Edited from SIA Daily News)

Staffing Industry Analysts is accepting nominations for this year’s “40 Under 40” list of up-and-coming staffing industry executives. Submit nominations online through April 23.

Having debuted in 2017, the list recognizes the achievements, ambition and influence of young leaders who are advancing what SIA calls “the workforce solutions ecosystem” positively.

For this year’s nominations, the company will consider professionals born after July 31, 1981, who work in the staffing industry, but not as suppliers. A website will accompany the feature in Staffing Industry Review magazine.

How ‘Bout This?

Companies Increased Use Of Temp Workers In Past Year

(Edited from SIA Daily News

More than half of companies surveyed (52%) have increased their use of temporary workers in the past year, according to a poll by PeopleReady, a division of TrueBlue Inc. (NYSE: TBI). The top reason cited is the need to scale their workforces.

In addition, 65% of workers surveyed said they were considering temporary or part-time work to earn more income amid a rough economy.

Other findings in the report:

  • 74% of hiring managers say the pandemic has changed how they staff their workforces.
  • 53% of companies increased their use of staffing firms during the last year.
  • The overwhelming majority, 77%, of people now know someone who has lost a job in the past year.

The survey of hiring managers and employees was conducted between Dec. 19 and Jan. 2.

80% Satisfied With Remote Work

(Edited from SIA Daily News)

As the COVID-19 lockdown neared the one-year mark, Infosys Ltd. reported a majority of US workers (80%) said they were “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with remote work, despite higher workloads and a lack of social interaction with colleagues. The information comes from a survey of employees and managers at US-based companies by Infosys and the Milken Institute.

Women (93%) were slightly more satisfied with remote work than men (88%). However, 82% of managers said their employees are working more than they were before the pandemic, with more than half saying that they work “a lot” more.

Income inequality also appears as an issue with remote work. The survey found that 69% of those with an income below $50,000 per year said they saw increased remote work opportunities since COVID-19, compared to 86% of those making more than $75,000 per year.
