Previewing the 2022 AAPPR Annual Conference in Chicago for Locum Tenens Recruiters

As the old saying goes, when it comes to success “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” And if you’re a physician recruiter, there’s no better way to grow your network than by attending the 2022 Annual AAPPR Conference.

This year’s conference will be held from April 23 to April 27 at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center in downtown Chicago. The event promises a plethora of educational sessions, optional training courses, interesting keynotes, exhibits from a bevy of locum tenens staffing agencies, networking opportunities, and so much more.

AAPPR, or the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment, has served as the “leading voice” for the healthcare recruiting industry for nearly 30 years and boasts 2,000 members, with roughly half of them attending the conference each year.

Highlighting the conference are two keynote speakers:

Dr. Kevin Ahmaad Jenkins and Stevie Ray. Dr. Jenkins is a speaker, author, scholar, and lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania whose work focuses on helping corporations have tough conversations about inequity. These conversations in turn help organizations work more smoothly and seem approachable to outsiders. Stevie Ray is an in-demand keynote speaker and corporate trainer as well as an entertainer who will discuss how organizations can utilize more effective methods of influencing both members within an organization and prospective customers and clients.

Among session topics, perhaps the most noteworthy will be the severe trend of physician turnover that’s been exacerbated by COVID-19. As the Association noted in a study released last year, “Physician turnover increased more than 4% since the previous year to an average of 13% in 2020.”

Another hot topic will be the trend of healthcare providers, including those working locum tenens assignments, considering rural practice to combat the fatigue induced by COVID and in urban hospitals as we discussed in a recent news brief.

Here’s the plan

Those who can’t attend can purchase video recordings when they’re available three weeks after the conference concludes.

Prices for in-person attendees range from $699 for members to $1,099 for non-members. Attendants can also purchase informational pre-conference courses at varying rates and a post-conference master class for $50. If you can’t attend in person, there’s the option to purchase video recordings of the event when they’re available three weeks after the conference concludes.

The conference recordings include four videos (both keynote speakers and two breakout sessions) and 10 audio and slide recordings from other sessions. A stand-alone purchase of the recordings will be $349 while those who have purchased in-person tickets can also purchase them for $99.

Events begin on April 23 with the optional pre-conference courses. The conference itself kicks off on April 24. Exhibit showings, speeches, and sessions continue through the next two days. The conference ends on April 27 with the optional master class.

If you’re interested in attending the conference but not currently a member of AAPPR, make sure you’re eligible to join.

Locums in Action

Two of the breakout sessions and a pre-conference course will be dedicated to locums topics.

The first breakout session, titled “How do Locums Feel About Working in YOUR Facility?”, will feature several locum tenens physicians sharing their first-hand knowledge of “the best practices in onboarding, care delivery, and more.” The session will be hosted by Cindy Slagle of CHG Healthcare.

The second is “Untangling Locum Tenens” and will feature locums experts who share, “real-life tactics to improve your Locums’ experience and save your organization money.” It will be hosted by Cristy Ricks of Provider Recruitment and Julie Brooks of LocumsMart.

The pre-conference course is “Locum Tenens Management” and promises to give participants, “knowledge to lead the locum management process within their organizations.”

In addition to the breakout sessions and management course, some locum tenens staffing agencies will be hosting exhibits including:
